Who Are We
Members of the Church with Visitors
Churches of God were first formed in Jerusalem and its surrounds shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus, around 30-40 AD. They consisted of groups of Jesus' disciples. In the Bible they are first referred to as 'Churches of God' in the apostle Paul's letter to Christians at Corinth.
His disciples had at first been horrified and disillusioned by the death (of which some of them had been eye-witnesses) of their leader whom they knew as not only a great teacher but also as the Son of God. Some of them were ready to leave Jerusalem and disperse to their home towns.
But when they realised that He was alive again (and indeed met Him and spoke with Him) they were so inspired that they banded together to do all that they could to spread the good news and to make sure that their memory of Him was always kept fresh in their minds. They met to do this on the first day of the Jewish week (that is our Sunday). This was the day of the week when the resurrection had taken place. At the 'last supper' before He was crucified, Jesus had already instructed them how to remember Him by the simple taking of bread and wine as symbols of His body and His blood. And Acts 2:41-42 tells us much about their practices as a church.
We too have been inspired by Him, especially by the sacrifice He made for us so that our sins could be forgiven and so that we could look forward to an 'eternal life' with Him in heaven. So we try to do all we can to follow the pattern of worship and of spreading the Good News that early Christians established.
We are part of a world-wide group of Churches of God all following the same Lord, Jesus Christ. More information about us is available using the links 'Our beliefs' and 'Churches of God' above.
Those who accepted his message were baptized and were added to their number. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
